Camponotus maculatus is a species of carpenter ant (genus Camponotus).
Geographic distribution: Africa, Greece, Southwest Asia. Habitat: Prefers steppe and dry forest. Queen: Size: 16 - 17mm Color: Dark brown to black head, Yellowish chestnut, Dark brown to black pettre with yellow spots or stripes depending on the variety.
There is no sting, but workers can bite and spray formic acid for defense. The thorax is evenly convex; a key characteristic of carpenter ants. The thorax and head are ash brown to rusty-orange and the gaster is black.
There are two main ways to kill carpenter ants. First is baiting, which is the process of using toxic bait to attract the ants, who collect the bait and share it with the rest of the colony. The other method is spraying pesticides.
Workers do not sting but are capable of biting and injecting formic acid in the pierced area, which can be quite painful.
