Lychnis coronaria is a superb plant for a sunny border. A short-lived perennial, it forms clumps of silver felty leaves, which make a pleasant backdrop to bright magenta flowers in late summer.
Individual plants live only a year or two, and are replaced by volunteer seedlings. When well pleased with its site, rose campion will reseed for many years, with new seedlings appearing in fall and spring.
Poisonous through ingestion and dermatitis. Symptoms may include: Inflammation and blistering upon contact with fresh sap; irritation of mouth, vomiting and diarrhea following ingestion.
From a maintenance point of view Lychnis is easy to look after. All you need to do is dead-head regularly to make sure that your plants continue to produce new blooms. If you allow seed heads to form then Lychnis will put all it's energy into seed production and then self sow.
Rose campion may be propagated by seeds and basal cuttings. The plant self-seeds and has the potential to become invasive. The plant has an upright habit and a slender to stout taproot. The tall stems and silvery-green, lance-shaped foliage are covered densely with wooly hairs.
